Resin Folding Chairs and Misleading Safety Testing

Many of our Competitors Lie About Their Furniture Testing

resin folding chairs failed bifmaAt Vision Furniture we have tested our Resin Folding Chairs to BIFMA standards since 2013. Recently, we noticed that many cheap imported chairs are also claiming to meet the ANSI/BIFMA furniture testing standard.

It made us wonder – how can a chair that is sold at such a cheap price be able to meet the same rigorous safety and durability standards that our chairs meet? So, we ordered three sample chairs from our competitors and paid to have them tested in a U.S.  accredited testing lab.

In order to say your Resin Folding Chair meets the ANSI/BIFMA standard the chair needs to pass six different tests. We see so many websites claiming their chairs meet BIFMA, but they do not include any details on what that means or which tests their chair passes. Are these companies just using ANSI/BIFMA as a marketing gimmick with no real testing to actually back it up? It looks great online to say “ANSI/BIFMA Certified” – but is it TRUE?

When we sent the chairs to the testing lab, all three sample chairs from our competitors FAILED the BIFMA Drop Test. This is just one of the six necessary tests. The official name of this test is: ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017, Section 7 and all three chairs failed catastrophically.

And keep in mind, it was not as if they ALMOST passed – they didn’t even pass the first drop! The Vision Furniture chair met the BIFMA standard.

What is the BIFMA Dynamic Drop Test?

After testing our Wood Chiavari Chairs and Resin Folding Chairs so many times, we now know that the most difficult test for a Resin Folding Chair to pass is the Dynamic Drop test. This test simulates a large person flopping down onto the seat top in two steps.

Folding chairs have a hard time passing this test because the nature of the folding seat makes it a weak area for people who may flop down onto the seat. This is the area of folding chairs that could break catastrophically if not strong and reliably made.

The Drop Test in 2 Steps – ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017, Section 7

Step 1: dropping 225lbs onto the chair from 6 inches above the seat top. If the chair survives the first drop then they move on to Step 2: dropping 300lbs onto the chair from 6 inches above the seat top.

Poorly made chairs SNAP and practically explode at the chair’s folding mechanism. And that’s just what happened to our competitors cheap chairs. They broke on the first drop at the chair frame’s folding mechanism. You see in the video that these low-priced imported chairs have hollow seat frames with very thin outer walls. This is a sign of poor quality injection molding.

These chairs did not meet the testing standard even though they are advertised as meeting ANSI/BIFMA. These companies mislead their buyers by luring them with cheap prices and inaccurate testing information.

Our Resin Folding Chairs are made in the USA and pass both drops in this test.

When a chair meets all 6 BIFMA tests, it means that the chair is estimated to have a 10 year single shift use life. Which equates to 10 years of use, 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. That’s 20,000 hours of use!

VF Resin Folding Chairs are Made in the USA and Meet BIFMA

Resin Folding Chairs can be found in most wedding and special event venues. They are a great option for outdoor events with their clean, casual look. At Vision Furniture we manufacture our Resin Folding Chairs in the United States and test them to applicable US BIFMA commercial furniture standards.

At Vision, we make a safe and reliable Resin Folding Chair that we make in the USA and meets the following BIFMA commercial furniture testing standards:

Backrest Strength – ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2011, Section 6

Seating Durability – ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2011, Section 11

Stability Tests – ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2011, Section 12

Back Durability – ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2011, Section 16

Leg Strength Test – ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2011, Section 18

Dynamic Drop Test: ANSI/BIFMA X5.1-2017, Section 7

Many of our competitors make false claims about the testing they do on their chairs and try to market their chairs as being the best, strongest and cheapest chair. This is just too good to be true.
